Mathare United are 17th on 22 points, four adrift of the relegation playoff places with two matches remaining.

Mathare United head coach Collins Omondi Korea is keen to help his side avoid relegation in order to uphold the 'rich history' of the club.

The 2008 league champions are at risk of losing their status as a top flight club for the first time in quite a long time, as they currently sit 17th in the log on 22 points, four behind Wazito with two games of the season left to play.

“Mathare United has been a pillar of Kenyan football. Every facet in football has had influence from this institution ranging from coaching to player development in both the female and male’s game,” he said.

“For this reason, we want to keep upholding this rich history and to secure our place in the top tier of football.”

It has been a roller-coaster season for Mathare United. The side have been under the guidance of three different coaches, which has resulted in a lack of cohesion given the contrasting methods each coach has brought.

Korea, who claims the side was lacking cohesion when he joined at the beginning of May, believes that his side have played good football particularly in their last three fixtures, but luck has not been on their side.

While acknowledging their past achievements, the team is, however, now focused on it’s current situation, which will be the round 33 game tagainst Ulinzi Stars and are gunning for a positive result to be able to take this battle down to the wire.

“The team’s attitude is fantastic, and we expect a positive outcome in our match against Ulinzi on Wednesday. Although our style of play has been commendable, we need to work on converting our opportunities into goals," he added.

“We have been focusing on improving our effectiveness in front of the goal during training.”

The slum boys will play Ulinzi Stars at the Kasarani Annex on Wednesday afternoon.
