Senator Bonny Khalwale urges Kakamega County to take urgent action to restore AFC Leopards' former football glory.

Sometimes when football clubs struggle, the issues go far beyond the pitch and Senator Bonny Khalwale believes that is exactly the case with AFC Leopards.

Speaking passionately about the fate of the 12-time FKF Premier League champions, Khalwale has taken aim at the Kakamega County Government, urging a new direction that could save the once-mighty club from its current struggles.

The outspoken Kakamega Senator has laid out a bold three-pronged proposal, urging the county leadership under Governor Fernandes Barasa to step in and take an active role in reviving the club.

Drawing comparisons from neighboring counties and expressing dismay at the current situation, Khalwale did not hold back.

“When we wrote the new constitution we specified clearly that sports will be devolved to the county governments. As we talk now I want to applaud the four counties from Nyanza region for giving Shabana FC the much needed financial support especially Nyamira and Kisii counties,” said Khalwale as per Citizen Digital.

“But here in Kakamega it is the exact opposite because the money that we should have channeled to support Leopards, the governor has instead decided to finance Kakamega Homeboyz under Cleophas ‘Toto’ Shimanyula. That is not what Leopards fans will want to hear because Ingwe is our team and a symbol of Western unity.”

3. Redirect Funding to AFC Leopards

Khalwale’s first proposal is a straightforward yet controversial one: he wants Governor Barasa to stop prioritizing Kakamega Homeboyz with county funds and instead shift financial backing to AFC Leopards.

According to the senator, the club represents a much broader identity, with a deeper historical and cultural significance to the Western region.

“Ingwe is a big team with rich history and maximum respect regionally and in the continent. We should get back to our glory days of winning titles,” he added.

The senator pointed to the support shown by Kisii and Nyamira counties for Shabana FC as proof that such county-level investment in sports can yield success and boost community morale.

2. Forge Partnerships with Local Schools

The second way Khalwale believes Kakamega can uplift AFC Leopards is by creating strong partnerships between the club and secondary schools in the region.

According to him, these schools are teeming with untapped football talent that could be nurtured into future stars.

Khalwale wants a long-term vision in place, connecting AFC Leopards with institutions across the region for talent scouting and development.

“Ingwe must partner with Western region secondary schools in sourcing good talents for the betterment of the team,” he added.

This grassroots approach, he argued, would not only enrich the club’s player pool but also inspire young athletes in the region to dream big and pursue football as a viable career path.

1. Demand Vision from New Leadership

AFC Leopards is preparing for a leadership transition following the upcoming elections on June 29 and Khalwale’s final demand is a call to action for the incoming management.

He urged the new office bearers to focus on strategy, vision, and discipline, steering the club away from short-term gimmicks and toward a structured path to success.

“The vision that the club has must be that which will help fix the problems of the team. I have a plan and it is not about coming up with tournaments for Leopards to play in them. For the incoming chairman, you must have a plan for the team,” he concluded.

Khalwale’s remarks are likely to resonate with AFC Leopards’ massive fanbase, many of whom have watched their beloved team struggle both financially and competitively in recent years.

The June 29 elections are drawing near and all eyes will be on what comes next for the Western giants—and whether Khalwale’s proposed rescue plan will inspire meaningful change.
