Former Gor Mahia coach is in support of Victor Wanyama making a sensational return to the Harambee Stars squad.

Former Gor Mahia coach Bob Oyugi believes Victor Wanyama could be an asset to national team Harambee Stars amid his rumoured return.

Pulse Sports previously reported that the former Stars captain has held discussion with Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy over the possibility of coming out of international retirement to help inject experience into the side ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations assignment.

Experience in plenty

Wanyama, who plies trade with Scottish Championship side Dunfermline, last played for Harambee Stars in 2021 when he changed up his boots.

Even as the news continued to elicit mixed reactions from stakeholders, Oyugi told Flashscore that the former Celtic man has unfinished business with the national team.

According to former Gor Mahia coach Bob Oyugi, Kenya still needs the leadership qualities and experience from Wanyama.

“Wanyama left playing for Kenya prematurely, he should come back and complete the job he left. Every coach has his/her own philosophy, he (McCarthy), therefore, knows why he wants him back," Oyugi said.

Victor Wanyama, 33, was an ever present member in the Harambee Stars fold prior to his retirement.

Oyugi maintained that age is not a factor in the decision, arguing that his experience will come in handy if his past performances are any barometer.

“The gap Wanyama left has not been filled, remember Roger Milla for Cameroon?" Oyugi further posed a question.

“Roger Milla had retired at the age of 39 and was called back to reinforce the Indomitable Lions squad heading to the 1990 World Cup, where he made a record history, equally Wanyama can still do it for Kenya.”

Proven performer

Victor Wanyama may still have a future at Dunfermline Athletic.

The former Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur man captained the national side at the Africa Cup of Nations in 2019, when Kenya finished third in their group behind eventual finalists Algeria and Senegal.

Wanyama made his debut for Harambee Stars in May 2007, aged just 15, in a friendly against Nigeria, and he went ahead to play in all six of Kenya’s 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
