Victor Wanyama will make a sensational return from his international retirement after receiving a Harambee Stars call-up and here is how he can be of help to Benni McCarthy.

Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy pulled off a surprise when he named veteran midfielder Victor Wanyama in his provisional squad for the friendly match against Chad in June.

Wanyama had admitted just last week that he has been having conversations with McCarthy over the possibility of coming out of international retirement and it has not taken longer for that to come to fruition.

Wanyama last played for Harambee Stars in 2020 and announced his international retirement in September 2021 after falling out of favour, having failed to receive national team call-ups over a longer period.

However, McCarthy has convinced him to come out of retirement after four years, a decision that has divided opinion among fans, but his return will be beneficial to the South African coach in a number of ways.

Valuable Experience to The Squad

While there have been murmurs of discontent over his inclusion, Wanyama will add experience to a team that needs it as McCarthy’s squad is largely made up of young players.

Wanyama is still just 33, even as many feel he is ‘too old,’ while the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo (40), Luka Modric (39) and Robert Lewandowski (36) are still going strong for their nations.

The valuable experience that he brings to the fold cannot be underestimated having played at the top level for Celtic, Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur, CF Montreal, and now in the Scottish second tier with Dunfermline Athletic.

Presence and Calmness in Midfield

While Wanyama will not play much under McCarthy, his presence in midfield will bring some calmness to what has been a chaotic engine room at times.

Not as quick as he used to be, Wanyama still possesses the power and physicality while he is not the type to panic when things get tough, something the other players can benefit from when he is the team, whether a few or many minutes.

Best Teacher for the Youngsters

As McCarthy builds a team of young players, he will be thankful that veteran Wanyama is around to offer first-hand lessons to the emerging stars.

Wanyama will help mold the youngsters as some of the players, especially those from the U20 team, have idolized him while growing up.

What’s more, the midfielder will pass on the message in the language the youngsters understand better while they will be more than willing to open up to him compared to McCarthy whom they might fear because is their boss.
