Alonso to leave, Ten Hag linked
As Pulse Sports reported, Bayer Leverkusen have officially confirmed that their legendary head coach, Xabi Alonso, will depart the club at the end of the 2024-25 season, marking the end of a transformative era.
The announcement, made via a heartfelt club statement, follows Alonso’s decision to terminate his contract, originally set to run until summer 2026, as he prepares to take on new challenges, with speculation linking him to Real Madrid.
In another Pulse Sports report, Bayer Leverkusen are said to be considering former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag as a potential replacement for Alonso. The report relayed a claim from Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg that Ten Hag is the frontrunner to replace the exiting Spaniard.
Fabregas enters the fray
A recent report from another German publication, Kicker, confirmed the interest in Ten Hag but added that Leverkusen also admire Fabregas and have added him to their list of targets, which only contains the two names.
)
In a comparative analysis of the financial requirement to land either target, the publication gathered that Die Werkself would have to pay Ten Hag a salary of up to $12 million, a fee significantly higher than the demands of the less experienced Fabregas.
However, given that the former Arsenal midfielder has a contract with Como until 2028, Leverkusen will have to pay a transfer fee. This means that it could cost as much to bring in Fabregas as it would Ten Hag.
