CHAN 2024: CAF Clears Only One Training Facility in Kenya as Kasarani and Nyayo Stadiums Lag Behind

CAF has cleared just one facility in Kenya being a key training ground while Kasarani and Nyayo Stadiums remain behind schedule ahead of CHAN 2024.

Amid concerns over Kenya’s lack of preparedness for the delayed 2024 African Nations Championships (CHAN 2024), there is some positive news.

Confederation of African Football (CAF) inspectors were in Kenya from Thursday to Saturday last week looking at the proposed venues to host the matches as well as training facilities and they were not impressed with most of them.

This is because the playing surfaces at both Kasarani and Nyayo stadiums, the two venues earmarked to host matches, were deemed not to be up to the required standards while some training venues such as Kirigiti Stadium in Kiambu County were far from done.

Ulinzi Complex will be one of training facilities during CHAN 2024.

However, Pulse Sports understands Ulinzi Complex has been given a clean bill of health as one of the training facilities for the tournament after an upgrade that cost over Ksh490 million.

Other Training Facilities Still Not Ready

The facility, which will host the Kip Keino Classic on Saturday, is now ready for use but Police Sacco grounds, Kasarani Annex and Kirigiti, the other training facilities are yet to be cleared as they are not ready.

CAF’s inspection team, led by third vice president Pierre Alain Mounguengui, was left unimpressed by the speed at which work is being done in Kenya, just two months to the tournament that will kick off on August 2, in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.

The Kenyan government has, however, allayed any concerns that the country will not meet the deadlines.

“We had a meeting on Friday with the CAF officials because it is standard procedure for CAF to conduct periodic inspections up until the final day in July. In our discussions, we affirmed Kenya’s full readiness to host CHAN,” Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya said on Monday.

It remains to be seen how Kenya will cope with the increasing pressure from CAF amid the tightening deadline.
