Jeremy Frimpong completed his move to Liverpool a couple of days ago, but here are five things you need to know about the Dutchman's move to the English champions.

Liverpool have officially completed the signing of Dutch right-back Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen, activating his €35 million (£29.6m) release clause and handing him a five-year deal.

As the Premier League champions strengthen for the season ahead, here are five key things to know about their newest addition.

1. He’s Not a Trent Clone – and That’s the Point

Frimpong isn’t coming to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold — at least not stylistically. While Trent has evolved into a deep-lying playmaker, Frimpong is a throwback to the classic attacking full-back.

His game is built around raw speed, directness, and flair in the final third. He thrives on isolating defenders and blowing past them with dribbles, flicks, and clever movement.

Don’t expect him to ping 40-yard diagonals from midfield — but do expect defenders left trailing in his wake. He’s a constant attacking threat who could inject something fresh and unpredictable into Liverpool’s right side.

2. He’s Tactically Intriguing for Arne Slot

Frimpong’s arrival gives new head coach Arne Slot plenty to think about. With Alexander-Arnold often moving into midfield last season, Liverpool may need to adapt their structure to suit Frimpong’s more direct style.

His forward surges can leave gaps behind, meaning the right-sided centre-back — likely Ibrahima Konaté — could need more cover.

Slot could ask a midfielder to provide defensive support when Frimpong pushes forward. Alternatively, the 23-year-old could be used further up the pitch, potentially as a deputy or rotation option for Mohamed Salah. Either way, his pace and penetration offer Liverpool new tactical flexibility.

3. A Transfer 15 Years in the Making

Born in Amsterdam, Frimpong moved to England aged seven — and was scouted by both Manchester City and Liverpool just two years later.

He chose City and rose through their academy but, with first-team minutes limited, made a smart career move to Celtic in 2019. He won a domestic treble in Scotland, then joined Bayer Leverkusen in 2021.

Under Xabi Alonso, Frimpong flourished. He was a key piece of Leverkusen’s invincible Bundesliga-winning campaign, earning his place in the Netherlands national team setup — and finally making his senior debut in October 2023. Now, in a twist of fate, he ends up at Anfield.

4. Fitness You Can Rely On

One of Frimpong’s biggest assets isn’t just his speed or creativity — it’s his availability. Across the past three seasons, he hasn’t missed a single match due to injury. His only serious setback came in March 2022, when an ankle ligament injury ended his season prematurely.

In a high-intensity league like the Premier League, where player rotation and durability are critical, Frimpong’s excellent fitness record could prove invaluable. He’s not just explosive — he’s dependable.

5. The Finances Behind the Deal Make Sense

Liverpool triggered Frimpong’s £29.6 million release clause, which will be paid over three years. The total cost, including an estimated 10% agent fee, comes to around £32.5 million. That breaks down to about £6.4 million per year in amortisation costs — manageable for a club of Liverpool’s stature.

While Leverkusen owe a portion of the fee to Celtic due to a sell-on clause, they’ll still walk away with around £23 million in profit. Liverpool, on the other hand, have secured one of Europe’s most exciting right-backs at what many would consider a bargain price, given his form and potential.

Jeremie Frimpong brings speed, flair, durability, and tactical intrigue to Anfield — and at a cost that’s been carefully calculated. He’s not here to mimic Trent Alexander-Arnold but to offer Liverpool something refreshingly different on the right flank. For a club that thrives on evolution and intensity, Frimpong might be the injection of chaos that Arne Slot needs.
