The 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) marked Kenya’s return to the continental tournament after a 15-year absence. One of the most thrilling matches of the group stage was the clash between Kenya and Tanzania.

With both teams having lost their opening games to Algeria and Senegal respectively, a win was of absolute importance in order to give either side a solid base to build for their last game in order to stand a chance of qualifying for the knockout rounds.

Tanzania struck early, grabbing a lead within the first minutes of the game through former Aston Villa striker Mbwana Samatta.

Kenya responded swiftly through Michael Olunga's brilliant bicycle kick, but found themselves trailing again after another Tanzanian goal.

The match seemed to be slipping away, but the Stars, driven by determination, mounted a stunning comeback, with Johana Omollo finding the equaliser.

Olunga then stole the show by scoring his second of the night and match winning goal. The match ended in a 3-2 victory, securing Kenya’s first AFCON win since 2004 and proving their resilience on the big stage.

In the 2004 AFCON, Harambee Stars, making their tournament appearance after years of struggle, faced Burkina Faso in their final group match.

Though Kenya had already been eliminated after losses to Senegal and Mali, they sought to leave the competition with pride.

Kenya stunned Burkina Faso with a commanding 3-0 win, marking their first-ever victory at the Africa Cup of Nations. John Baraza, Dennis Oliech, and Emmanuel Ake found the back of the net, leaving fans jubilant.

While they did not progress past the group stage, this historic victory demonstrated that Kenya could compete at the highest level.

3. Kenya vs Nigeria – 2013: A Draw Against African Champions

In March 2013, Kenya traveled to Calabar, Nigeria, for a World Cup qualifier against the Super Eagles, the reigning African champions.

Few expected Harambee Stars to stand a chance against a Nigerian squad loaded with talent, including John Obi Mikel and Victor Moses.

Despite their poor preparations and unfavorable odds, Kenya displayed remarkable discipline and tactical awareness.

Francis Kahata stunned the home crowd with a stunning free-kick goal, giving Kenya a lead deep into the match. Though Nigeria managed a late equalizer, Kenya’s performance earned them respect and proved they could hold their own against Africa’s top teams.

While Kenya benefited from Ghana’s mistake, their defensive discipline throughout the match ensured they held onto the crucial win.

Even more impressive was the fact that they managed to win being 10 men down after Joash Onyango was sent off for a professional foul.

The result boosted Kenya’s qualification hopes and proved they could go toe-to-toe with African football giants.
