Newly elected AFC Leopards chairman Bonface Ambani sets ambitious transformation agenda for Ingwe.
Newly elected AFC Leopards chairman Bonface Ambani has unveiled an ambitious plan to transform the historic Kenyan football club into a money-minting, international brand, just days after officially taking over the reins at the Den.
Ambani, a revered figure in Kenyan football, is no stranger to Ingwe — having once led the team to league glory as a forward in 1998.
A former player for Rivatex, Tusker, and AFC Leopards, he also featured for clubs in India, Vietnam, Oman, and Tanzania, and earned 12 caps for the Harambee Stars, scoring five international goals.
Since hanging up his boots, Ambani has focused on coaching and football development, helping shape clubs like Mara Sugar, Nakuru Bucks, Kangemi All Stars, and AFC’s youth team. Now, as chairman, he's setting his sights on a larger, transformative legacy.

CHAN 2024: Benni McCarthy Names Harambee Stars Provisional Squad
Benni McCarthy has unveiled a 35-man provisional Harambee Stars squad for the 2024 CHAN tournament, his first major assignment as Kenya’s head coach.
This is an International Brand - Ambani
Speaking in a recent interview with TV47, Ambani didn’t mince words about the state of the club and his vision for the future.
“This club is an international brand, not a local one. The way we are treating it, you would assume it is a local one.”
“We need to overhaul it. We need to bring in fresh blood, involve so many other guys into football, and we should also be thinking about boosting the entertainment value beyond just the football to boost its profile.”
With an estimated fan base of over 10 million, Ambani lamented that AFC Leopards currently lacks a permanent home ground and suggested bold initiatives to increase the club's visibility, revenue, and infrastructure.

'She Showed That I Should Have Stayed Longer' – Usain Bolt Pays Heartfelt Tribute to Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce
Usain Bolt paid a touching tribute to Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, admitting her enduring greatness made him feel he retired too soon.
“We should even be having a TV,” he said. “We have so many people in the corporate world from the western region who we do not capitalise on. Yet we are only looking for one sponsor.”
Ambani also stressed the need for diversified sponsorship and corporate engagement, especially targeting untapped potential within Kenya’s business community.
“For instance, we have a junior team, and that cannot be sponsored by a betting company. We need to go look for partnerships to come and boost us.”
He envisions a day where AFC Leopards no longer endures logistical struggles during domestic travel.
“We are not supposed to be having AFC Leopards flying from Nairobi to Mombasa. We need to get them flown there and back — if we find a travel partner.”
Ambani - I Want to Leave a Legacy
)
For Ambani, it’s not just about rebuilding — it’s about redefining the club’s identity and future.
“I want to leave a legacy and be remembered as a leader who came to the club, transformed it and elevated it to international standards.”
With a rich history and a loyal fan base, AFC Leopards has long been regarded as one of Kenya’s sleeping giants. Under Ambani’s leadership, it now has a chairman determined to awaken it — and push it onto the continental and global stage.
