The accident occurred at 12:30am local time (11:30pm BST) on the A-52 motorway, near the municipality of Cernadilla, Zamora. Jota and his brother were driving late at night when disaster struck.

According to Sky News early reports, their vehicle veered off the road while overtaking another car. Moments later, a tire burst, causing the car to lose control.

Tragically, the vehicle caught fire after it left the road. The intensity of the blaze meant emergency responders could not save the brothers despite arriving quickly.

Andre Silva, aged just 26, was himself pursuing a football career in Portugal’s second division. He played for Liga Portugal 2 side Penafiel and, like Diogo, came through Porto’s academy.
