Kelvin Kiptum stunned the whole world by breaking Eliud Kipchoge's world record time and he will be awarded handsomely for his exploits.

Newly crowned Chicago Marathon champion Kelvin Kiptum will definitely be going to the bank with a smile on his face thanks to his dominant exploits on Sunday evening.

Kiptum, competing in just but his third marathon, shocked the whole world after lowering the marathon world record by 34 seconds. Kiptum clocked 2:00:35 to obliterate Eliud Kipchoge’s world record time of 2:01:09.

He started off the race on a high and managed to keep the momentum until he finished the race. Debutant Daniel Mateiko tried keeping up with him but at the 33km mark, Kiptum started moving away from his compatriot, an effort that eventually saw him break the world record.

In the hotly contested race, defending champion Benson Kipruto finished second in a time of 2:04:02 and Belgium’s Bashir Abdi completed the podium in 2:04:32.

With his performance, he will first walk away with Ksh 14,870,000 for winning the race according to the Chicago Marathon race organisers.

On top of breaking the world record, Kiptum also broke the course record that was set by Dennis Kimetto during the 2013 edition of the marathon when he clocked 2:03:45 to win the race.

For breaking Kimetto’s course record, Kiptum will be awarded an additional Ksh Ksh 7,435,000. Owing to the fact that Kiptum ran a sub 2:06:00, he will bag an additional Ksh 5,946,000.

As per World Athletics, Kiptum will also be awarded for breaking the world record, once it is ratified. He will walk away with more than Ksh 7 million for his dominant exploits.
