Akani Simbine excecuted an incredible anchor leg to run down USA's Brandon Hicklin and win South Africa gold in the 4 x 100m final at the World Athletics Relays in China last week.

American sprint icon Justin Gatlin has explained why rival nations should be wary of Akani Simbine and Team South Africa in the men’s 4 x 100m relay.

Following South Africa’s dramatic win over the United States in the men’s 4x100m relay at the 2025 World Athletics Relays, Gatlin gave credit where it was due—both to Dennis Mitchell of Star Athletics Club, whose training camp  produced the American quartet that clinched silver and to the explosive anchor leg run from Simbine that turned the tables in Nassau.

For the meet, the USA opted not to pick some of their best sprinters, such as Christian Coleman and Noah Lyles, but Gatlin still believes that even with a full strength squad, South Africa, who clinched silver at the Paris Olympic games, have alot to offer.

“First of all, shoutout to Dennis Mitchell and Star Athletics. He’s pulled off the hat trick,” Gatlin said on his Ready Set Go podcast , noting that all four men who ran for Team USA hail from Mitchell’s training group.

“Starting off with Courtney Lindsey, Kenny Bednarek—Kung Fu Kenny—then Kyrie King on the third leg, and Brandon Hicklin anchoring. That whole team comes from one training camp by itself. So shouts out to Dennis Mitchell pulling off the hat trick for sure.”

Gatlin  was impressed with the Americans’ performance overall, especially considering some were relatively new to the world stage.

“You look at that team and yeah, it’s still a young team. You’ve got people like Courtney Lindsey who’s gotten his feet wet in a couple of relays already for Team USA.

“ Same thing with Kyrie, reaching his peak relay performances by being on the Olympic team as well. Kenny’s out there rolling, doing his thing. And Brandon Hicklin is the new guy. They had him at anchor. They did an amazing job. I mean, at the end of the day, they handled business.”

But then came that finish.

Gatlin: Akani Simbine’s South Africa Are Ruthless

“They were out in front, winning—and here comes Simbine, baby,” he said with excitement, referencing Simbine’s nickname. “Akani is just in his bag right now, bro. If you think about it and watch that run—where the camera frame is—you didn’t even know Team USA was out in front that far.”

Gatlin described the jaw-dropping way Simbine closed the gap.

“Then he hits that gear. All of a sudden you see Brandon come back into the screen, and Akani starts to eat up that ground, the meters, to catch up and then surpass him to get to that finish line first.”

Beyond just the win, The 2004 Olympic 100m champion believes the result will elevate the South African squad’s belief.

“I love it because now it gives South Africa confidence. It gives those young guys that are running with Simbine confidence, knowing that they have a synergy, they have a plan. All they gotta do now is just up the ante.

"They gotta run faster, they gotta put out a better time, they gotta have smoother handoffs—because they bobbled that last exchange to Akani. I want to see a better feel from them, more confidence going into Japan for the World Championships.”

Gatlin: Andre De Grasse Will Step up for Canada When it Matters

Gatlin didn’t just reserve his analysis for the U.S. and South Africa—he also gave Canada, who are the reigning Olympic champions in the event, their flowers.

“Same thing with Canada, man. Canada comes with their A squad everywhere they go, for the most part. You see them run okay times, then good times, then you see them win major championships with that same squad. I’m not too bothered right now because it’s early for them. They know how to get the job done.”

And when it comes to championship moments, Mitchell reminded fans not to underestimate Andre De Grasse.

“If you give them a lane eight or nine—or lane three—they gonna sneak. They gonna be right there. And we already know how Andre De Grasse gets once he gets that stick in those really high-pressure moments. He’s going to flip a switch and kick it on.”

With The Tokyo World Championships  set to take place this September, Gatlin’s words are a timely reminder: the men’s 4x100m relay is far from a foregone conclusion—and Team USA, no matter how strong, will need to watch their backs.
