Faith Cherotich was unsatisfied with one element of her running in Doha after she obliterated Winfred Yavi in the final 30 meters of their 3000 meter-steeplechase showdown on Sunday.

Faith Cherotich has expressed concern about the execution of the final part of her running after her kick managed to get her over the line, narrowly edging out Bahrain’s Winfred Mutile Yavi in the 3000 meter steeplechase race at the Doha Diamond League classic on Friday.

Cherotich,20, clocked a world-leading time of 9:05.08 to floor the reigning World and Olympic champion in the final track event of the night.

Yavi, the pre-race favourite, cleared the final barrier first but could not find an answer to Cherotich's kick and would settle for second in 9:05.26.

The race got off to a moderate pace, with Yavi,Cherotich and other top athletes including former Olympic champion Peruth Chemutai tucking in behind the pacemakers.

Ethiopia’s Sembo Almayew and Kenyan-born Bahraini athlete Daisy Jepkemei exchanged leads early into the race, with Cherotich following in closely.

At the 2600m mark, Yavi and Cherotich broke away from the field, with the former appearing to be in control and on course for another win over the Kenyan.

But with 200 meters to go, Cherotich unleashed a decisive surge, clearing the final water jump with precision before outsprinting Yavi to the finish.

Cherotich flipped the script on her rival, beating her for the second time to build on from her win in Brussels to clinch the Diamond League trophy.

Cherotich: I Have to Improve My Finishing Gear

"I was not expecting to win, but first, I want to thank God that I became the winner," she said after the race.

"It was not easy. I realized that I have a finishing problem because I was almost ready to give up in the 200 meters. But I kicked all the way to the finish."

Now, she plans to turn that late-race struggle into a learning opportunity.

"For now, I’m going to prepare specifically to improve my finishing gear."

Reflecting on the level of competition, she admitted it was among the toughest she’s faced.

"Yeah, of course it was a tough race. It felt like an Olympic Games or a World Championship final," she explained. "It was not easy."

Her motivation to keep pushing came from past podium finishes — and the encouragement that followed.

"When I won the bronze medal in Paris, it encouraged me so much. So I went back, worked hard, and now I'm focused on Tokyo."

Cherotich: I Don’t Fear Winfred Yavi Anymore

Last December,  Cherotich issued a bold warning to her competitors, including Bahraini star Winfred Yavi, asserting that she no longer feels intimidated by them after a breakthrough victory in 2024.

For a long time, Cherotich had become accustomed to finishing third, ever since the 2023 season, having settled for the position at the Budapest World Athletics Championships, the Diamond League final that year as well as the Paris Olympic games.

However, Cherotich shattered the narrative with a stunning victory at the Diamond League final in 2024, finally breaking free from the grip of third place. Reflecting on this milestone, she admitted that doubts about her abilities had held her back before the win.

"I now have the confidence," Cherotich said in an interview with NTV and reported by Pulse Sports . "Yavi will not scare me anymore. Not just Yavi, but my other competitors as well.”

With her confidence now soaring and tactical awareness sharpened, Cherotich is quickly evolving into a complete championship contender heading toward Tokyo and beyond.
