Winfred Yavi is not disappointed following her narrow loss to youngster Faith Cherotich in the women’s 3000m steeplechase at the Diamond League Meeting in Doha, Qatar.
The Kenyan-born Bahraini was opening her 2025 season in Doha, with Faith Cherotich also competing in her first race of the 2025 season.
The reigning Olympic champion was a favourite to win the race but was forced to finish second behind Faith Cherotich, who clocked a world-leading time of 9:05.08. Winfred Yavi clocked 9:05.26 with Ethiopia’s Sembo Almayew coming in third in 9:09.27.

Winfred Yavi pointed out that what matters most is her form at the World Championships, where her main goal will be to defend her title, one that she won at the 2023 global showpiece in Budapest, Hungary.
She added that the race was like a repeat of the Olympic final in Paris, France and admitted that she did not believe in herself enough to take the win in the race, however, that will change going forward.
