Agnes Ngetich set a new world lead in the 5000m at the ongoing Miami Grand Slam Track just days after setting the new 10k world record.

Agnes Jebet Ngetich has thrown down the gauntlet in the race for 5000m supremacy with a stunning victory at the Grand Slam Track meet in Miami, clocking a world-leading time and personal best of 14:25.80.

Ngetich, who recently set a new 10 kilometer world record in Germany, demonstrated her growing dominance on the track by outkitting a loaded field that included Ethiopia’s Medina Eisa, who finished a close second in 14:25.92. Hirut Meshesha completed the podium in third, crossing the line in 14:40.46.

After the race, Ngetich offered insight into her bold mid-race tactics, revealing she had anticipated a late move from her competitors. “I knew he would make his move either in the 200 meters or 100 meters,” she said after the race.

“So I tried to push from 200 — at least to accelerate fast.”

The Kenyan star admitted that her recent brush with history had inspired her to go all out in Miami. “Just a few days ago, I set  the world record [in the 10k] , and it gave me motivation to come and push here,” she added. “I had that energy and the psych to go again.”

Although known for her prowess over longer distances, Ngetich revealed her deep appreciation for track racing, especially during the high-paced Grand Slam season. “I like track and field because of the speed,” she said.

“For long distances, it’s a lot of mileage, but I love track season because of the speed and racing with these beautiful and strong ladies. It gives me motivation.”

Ngetich’s blistering time wasn’t just a personal milestone — it was a statement. With the reigning Olympic 5000m champion Beatrice Chebet herself taking part in the Diamond League as she begins her quest to keep her momentum from the 2024 Paris games going,

Ngetich’s performance in Miami serves as a loud and clear warning: the race for dominance in Kenyan women’s distance running is heating up.

The message is clear — Ngetich is not backing down, and she’s running with both purpose and pace.
