AFC Leopards visited the Nabongo Shrine for blessings leading to a significant 2-0 victory against Nairobi City Stars.

Twelve-time Football Kenya Federation Premier League champions AFC Leopards sought divine intervention at a local shrine before their crucial match against Nairobi City Stars.

The visit to the revered shrine of the Wanga Kingdom on the Mumias-Busia Road in Matungu, Kakamega County, proved to be a game-changer, leading to a remarkable 2-0 victory over City Stars at the Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega.

In a post match interview, AFC Leopards coach Tomas Trucha emphasized the significance of the visit, connecting the players with their ancestral roots and the heritage of their land.

"I took the guys to the Nabongo Shrine where the Wanga King is buried, and I told them, 'Look, this is history. This is where your grandparents, grandmothers, and grandfathers are from. This is our hood,'" he shared.

The gaffer believed that this experience helped the players understand the essence of their team identity, as represented by the leopard skin printed on their jerseys.

City Stars, who had been enjoying a seven-game winning streak and aspired to narrow the gap with league leaders Gor Mahia, found their ambitions dashed by the Leopards.

Goals from Maxwell Otieno and Kevin Kimani not only secured a win for AFC Leopards but also ended the impressive run of City Stars.

The decision to visit the shrine, a day before the match, was deeply symbolic for the team.

The shrine, also known as the Nabongo Cultural Centre, houses the tombs of Wanga kings, including the founder of the community, Nabongo Mumia.

Known locally as Eshiembekho, it is a site of significant historical and cultural importance, especially for the Luhya community.

The belief in the power of such rituals is strong among the ardent supporters of Ingwe, as they see it as a way to cleanse bad deeds and seek blessings for the challenging season ahead.

This ritualistic visit seems to have paid off, as AFC Leopards have now won three matches consecutively, beating Ulinzi Stars and Muhoroni Youth before their latest triumph on Sunday.

With these victories, Ingwe has accumulated 24 points, placing them 11th on the log.

Despite their loss, City Stars remain in a strong position, second on the log with 33 points, trailing 10 points behind Gor Mahia.
