Kenya Police have the upperhand in a fiercely contested title race against Gor Mahia as well as Tusker.

As the Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL) edges towards a dramatic conclusion, former AFC Leopards captain Washington Munene has thrown his weight behind current table-toppers Kenya Police to triumph over arch-rivals Gor Mahia in the high-stakes title run-in.

With only two matches left for Kenya Police, including a potentially decisive encounter against Gor Mahia, the Law Enforcers hold a crucial advantage at the top of the standings.

They sit on 61 points, six ahead of second-placed Tusker FC, while Gor Mahia are third on 54 points with a game in hand.

Despite Gor’s reputation as 21-time league champions, Munene believes this season belongs to the rejuvenated Police side.

Having witnessed Gor Mahia’s dominance firsthand during his playing days with Ingwe, Munene acknowledges their pedigree but insists the tide has turned in favour of Kenya Police.

The former Leopards defender attributes their rise to shrewd acquisitions and experienced leadership.

“Kenya Police have done a lot in terms of experienced players they have roped in this season. The signings they have activated show you how serious this club is, with players like Kahata (Francis) and Marvin (Nabwire) injecting belief in the team,” Munene told Citizen Digital.

Notably, Nabwire joined from AFC Leopards while Kahata brings top-flight experience from stints at Gor Mahia and Simba SC.

In contrast, Gor Mahia’s January transfer business, including the signing of Ugandan striker Charles Bbaale, has yet to deliver significant results.

Munene also lauded the competitiveness of the current FKFPL campaign, noting the uncertainty at both ends of the table as a positive sign of growth in Kenyan football.

“For the first time, it is open that even number 11 out of 18 teams can go down if not careful in the remaining two matches,” he said.

“The same thing is at the top because number three Gor Mahia, Tusker, and leaders Police can still win it.”

With the league poised for a nail-biting finish, all eyes are on the showdown between Gor Mahia and Kenya Police, an encounter that could ultimately determine the destiny of the 2024/25 FKFPL title.
