Kenya is in a race against time to meet key deadlines for the co-hosting of AFCON 2027.

Kenya’s preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) have received a significant boost following a government announcement to inject an additional Sh671 million into the development and management of sports facilities starting July 2025.

The move is part of a broader plan to ensure the country is ready to co-host the prestigious continental tournament alongside Uganda and Tanzania.

The increased funding will be channeled toward the construction and upgrading of key stadiums earmarked for the tournament, including the new Talanta Stadium and the renovation of existing facilities such as the Kasarani Stadium, Nyayo National Stadium, and Kipchoge Keino Stadium.

Talanta Stadium, expected to serve as Kenya’s main venue for the tournament, has faced delays, prompting President William Ruto to press for timely delivery during an earlier inspection visit.

The additional funds are expected to accelerate its completion.

In a further show of commitment, Nation Sports reports that the budget for sports training and competitions will rise by Sh102 million, underscoring the government’s wider push to strengthen the country’s sporting sector.

Additionally, general administration and planning expenses under the State Department for Sports will increase by Sh8 million, reflecting a structured approach to managing the sector’s growth.

In a parallel development, the Capital Markets Authority (CMA) has approved Kenya’s first-ever asset-backed security (ABS), a major financial instrument aimed at raising up to Sh47 billion from investors.

According Business Daily, the funds will support the construction of a government-owned, multi-billion-shilling sporting complex along Ngong Road in Nairobi.

Kasarani and Nyayo stadiums, currently undergoing the final stages of renovation, are expected to be ready soon and will play crucial roles in hosting the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

These venues, along with the upcoming Talanta Stadium, are also earmarked for the 2027 AFCON, positioning Kenya as a strong host.

Meanwhile, the Kipchoge Keino Stadium, whose construction had stalled, is expected to benefit substantially from the new budgetary allocations.

The government’s renewed commitment aims to fast-track all necessary infrastructure developments to meet CAF standards and deliver a successful continental tournament.
