The stalled project is expected to compliment the main stadia of the AFCON 2027 showpiece.

Kenya’s preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) have suffered a major blow following revelations of financial mismanagement tied to the construction of the Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret.

The stadium, projected to cost Sh1.16 billion, is one of the country’s flagship venues for the 2027 continental football tournament to be co-hosted with Uganda and Tanzania.

Expected to support the main 60,000-seater Talanta Stadium, as well as the Nyayo and Kasarani stadiums in Nairobi, Kipchoge Keino Stadium has become a symbol of stalled progress.

Construction work has come to a halt since December 2023, allegedly due to delayed payments from the Uasin Gishu County Government, sparking concerns over the viability of the project with just two years to the tournament.

Contractor Blames County for Stalling Works

Denis Ongata, the lead engineer overseeing the project, blamed the county government for irregular financial disbursements that have crippled the contractor's ability to proceed.

“The implementation of the project has been hit by the unsteady release of funds by the county government. It has been unreliable in the payment of Sh120 million, resulting in the stalling of the project since December 2023,” said Ongata as quoted by Nation Sports.

Despite already injecting Sh700 million into the project, the contractor has seen no progress due to what is being termed as a financial bottleneck.

Reports indicate that the Senate Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has taken notice and is now calling on the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to investigate the matter, citing suspected misappropriation of public resources and lack of proper oversight.

While Kipchoge Keino Stadium faces uncertainty, there is better news elsewhere as Talanta Stadium, which had previously faced similar scrutiny, has since rebounded and is currently progressing steadily.

Meanwhile, Nyayo and Kasarani stadiums are in the final phases of renovation.

Both are expected to be ready in time for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) in August, a crucial test event ahead of AFCON 2027.

The latest developments, however, cast a shadow over Kenya’s readiness to host the prestigious tournament and underline the pressing need for accountability if the country is to meet CAF standards and timelines.
