AFC Leopards claimed a hard-fought victory over Nairobi City Stars in an FKF Premier League match at Bukhungu Stadium.

AFC Leopards claimed a hard-fought 2-0 win over Nairobi City Stars in a FKF Premier League match played at the Bukhungu Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The victory saw Leopards climb up to the 10th spot on the league standings after recording their fifth win of the campaign and they will now travel to Machakos where they are scheduled to face Kariobangi Sharks on  February 4.

Ingwe looked to make it three league wins in a row on Sunday afternoon as they faced a tricky Nairobi City Stars team who were desperate to win their eighth consecutive match.

Once again, it appears that Coach Tomas Trucha has found the winning formula, as he was in high spirits and made only one change to the starting lineup, bringing Maxwell Otieno in while benching Brian Yakhama.

Ingwe enjoyed more possession in the opening stages of the match, but  City Stars looked dangerous on the counter-attack.

Clifton Miheso found some space outside the Simba wa Nairobi’s box in the eighth minute and he forced goalkeeper Edwin Mukolwe into a comfortable low save.

The former Bidco United glovesman also denied Jafari Owiti, who also tried his luck from range and Mukolwe made a comfortable save in the 12th minute.

Vincent Owino, the second-ranked FKF Premier League goal scorer this season with six goals, looked lively for Simba wa Nairobi upfront.

The former FC Talanta midfielder forced Leopards’ veteran keeper Levis Opiyo into a good save in the 21st minute.

Leopards then took control of the match - applying some pressure on the Simba wa Nairobi defence with the halftime break fast approaching.

However, City Stars managed to contain Leopards  and the score 0-0 at the interval following a lively first-half.

AFC Leopards were the better side after the restart and they managed to break the deadlock in the 48th minute courtesy of  Maxwell Otieno.

Tomas Trucha’s men should have added their second moments later as Calvins Opollo's header was pushed into Ingwe attacker Hassan Beja’s path by Mukolwe following a great cross from  Miheso.

But somehow Beja, who joined Leopards at the start of the season, placed his header wide of the target from close range.

Leopards coach Tomas Trucha made the first changes of the match in the 62nd minute - pulling out goalscorer Maxwell Otieno and Beja Hassan for Nyakeya Clifford and Omune Victor respectively.

Brian Mose missed out on a good chance, as City Stars  struggled to find a way back into the game – all while Leopards looked to provide a threat on the counter attack.

City Stars were left to rue that chance as  Leopards doubled their lead through Kevin Kimani, who beat  Mukolwe with a powerful shot to make it 2-0 to the hosts in the 72nd minute.

However, it was end-to-end stuff in the closing stages of the match as City Stars fought back in search of a late consolation goal.

Leopards substitute Dennis Oalo missed the target after being sent through on goal in the 89th minute and almost immediately at the other end Opiyo denied Owino with a brilliant low save.

Ultimately, Leopards were able to contain City Stars, who were reduced to ten men in the dying minutes of the game, and secured a 2-0 victory.
