Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane has questioned Arsenal's signing of Declan Rice, saying the English midfielder

Manchester United’s legendary captain Roy Keane has criticised Community Shield Champions Arsenal for paying over the odds to secure the services of English midfielder Declan Rice.

Manchester United legend critical of Rice signing

Keane, who joined Manchester United for a then British transfer record fee, believes that Arsenal’s Rice is not worthy of being accorded a similar honour after West Ham forced the Gunners to pay a total of £105 million for the Englishman, which is just shy of the current record held by Chelsea for Enzo Fernandez.

Keane was speaking ahead of Arsenal’s Community Shield win over Manchester City when he made these claims, noting that Rice would need to step up from his West Ham performances while doubting the England international’s ability to.

'He’s [Rice] obviously going to be surrounded by better players. Keane said, continuing, “Different demands, if he’s going to play a little bit higher up the pitch, I doubt] if he’s got that quality in terms of getting more goals. He’s obviously got that physical strength.

Keane sceptical Rice can take next step

Keane went on to say that Rice will now be under pressure to justify his price tag and could come up short in that respect, despite being a good addition to the Arsenal side.

The former Ireland international said, “They’ve paid way too much for him, Declan Rice, he’s obviously not worth over £100 million.”

“You can say that with lots of players I agree but again we’ll find out over the next year or two how good Declan is.

“He turns up every week. He’s a big strong boy and we talk about physicality and they lacked that in the last month or two has he got that real top quality in terms of seeing that pass and getting nine, ten goals we’ll soon find out.”

Rice has already claimed his first piece of silverware after joining Arsenal this summer after helping the Gunners overcome league champions Manchester City on penalties in the Community Shield and will hope it is the first of many.
