The Harambee Stars prospect has previously been linked with moves to Brighton and Wolves, and now Sunderland, who recently returned to the Premier League, have joined the chase.

Sunderland are reportedly targeting Brøndby's teenage midfielder Clement Mutahi Bischoff as a replacement for Tom Watson, according to a recent report by Telegraph journalist Mike McGrath.

Brighton & Hove Albion were also interested in Bischoff during the winter transfer window, reportedly bidding around £7 million, but a deal never materialized.

In recent weeks, he was also linked to Wolves to replace Romain Ait-Nouri, who joined Manchester City ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup.

The 19-year-old Bischoff represented Denmark in the UEFA European Under-21 Championship and scored two goals during the tournament as they were bundled out by France in the quater finals last Sunday.

The teenager has impressed since breaking into Brøndby's first team at the start of the 2024-25 season. He contributed two goals and ten assists in 40 appearances across all competitions, catching the eye of Sunderland with his skillful play on the left wing.

Brøndby are reportedly willing to accept an offer of around £5.1 million for the young midfielder. While they could potentially demand a higher fee, Bischoff's contract situation, with only one year remaining, strengthens Sunderland's negotiating position.

Brøndby are keen to avoid losing Bischoff on a free transfer next summer, making a sale this summer a more attractive option. The player would be eligible to sign a pre-contract agreement with another club in January.

Why Sunderland Are Pursuing Bischoff

Newly promoted Sunderland are looking to strengthen their squad to compete in the Premier League after an eight-year absence.

The departures of key players like Jobe Bellingham and Tom Watson, the latter scoring the winning goal in the promotion play-off final against Sheffield United, have left gaps in the squad. While Romaine Mundle performed well last season, Watson's move to Brighton leaves a vacancy on the left side of midfield.

Sunderland have secured Enzo Le Fée on a permanent deal, and he is expected to play a central midfield role in Bellingham's absence. Bischoff is seen as a direct replacement for Watson on the wing, providing competition and cover for Mundle.

While focusing on young talent, Sunderland also recognize the need for experienced players to navigate the challenges of the Premier League.

The relegation of all three promoted teams last season highlights the gap in quality between the Championship and the top flight, emphasizing the importance of a balanced squad for Sunderland, regardless of Bischoff's arrival.
