Former Harambee Stars forward Allan Wanga has explained how the 2024 African Nations Championships (CHAN) will grow Kenyan football.

As Kenya prepares to co-host the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) this August, former Harambee Stars striker Allan Wanga believes the tournament will be a crucial step in the country’s football development.

Wanga, who famously captained Kenya to victory in the 2023 CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup, spoke to Pulse Sports from Ulinzi Sports Complex on Sunday, moments after Kenya Police FC were crowned 2024/25 FKF Premier League champions, ending Gor Mahia’s recent dominance.

Originally slated for February and to be jointly hosted with Tanzania and Uganda, the CHAN tournament was postponed by CAF to allow the host nations to better prepare.

With the new kickoff date set for August, attention now turns to Benni McCarthy’s final squad selection, as Kenya eyes a strong showing ahead of co-hosting AFCON 2027.

“It is a step forward,” Wanga said.

“I know it will not be easy. We have got a lot of talents in the country and we will give it our best shot. We will learn from it and we will grow. I can only say it is a step forward.”

Wanga also pointed to the rise of Kenya Police FC as a positive shift in the local football landscape.

The Law Enforcers stunned many by halting Gor Mahia’s pursuit of a third consecutive league title, signaling a new era of increased competition in Kenyan football.

“It is a good thing. Teams like Gor Mahia will bounce back stronger, and it will motivate others to challenge for the top spots,” said Wanga.

“Police ascended to the league the other day, were consistent and now are bearing fruit.

“ It is a motivation to the other teams to continue working hard. It’s always good for different teams to keep winning.”

With CHAN 2024 on the horizon and local clubs showing growing ambition, Wanga’s optimism reflects a broader hope that Kenyan football is on the verge of a transformative phase — one that will continue building momentum into the 2027 AFCON.
