Harambee Stars midfielder Duke Abuya was grateful that his transfer to Yanga paid off well with a league title win in his first season after silencing rivals Simba.

Harambee Stars midfielder Duke Abuya is celebrating a league title after clinching the Tanzania Premier League crown with Yanga on Wednesday.

Yanga won the highly charged Kariakoo Derby 2-0 over bitter rivals Simba SC on Wednesday afternoon to hold onto their lead and make it four straight league titles, ending a season that had threatened to descend into chaos after the two teams had initially refused to honour the fixture due to various reasons.

The Tanzania Football Federation was forced to bring in referees from Egypt to take charge of the fixture and protect the integrity of the competition and when the match was played, Yanga, who were enjoying a one-point lead, finished off the job.

Ivorian midfielder Pacome Zouzoua was the architect of Simba’s downfall when he broke the deadlock in the 67th minute before he turned provider, setting up Clement Mzize to make the points safe.

It was an end to a remarkable turnaround for Yanga, who remained unbeaten in the league since December, with Wednesday’s victory the 15th in a row.

Abuya played his part in the league win as he was among the starting XI on Wednesday, having been among the key players for the Dar es Salaam-based giants since signing in July 2024 from Singida Black Stars.

The former Kenya Police midfielder took to social media to celebrate the league win.

“THANKING GOD … Ever ambitious… we persevered as a team … THANKS TO ALL THE SUPPORT FROM THE MANAGEMENT, SPONSORS AND OUR DEAR FANS … Y’all were with us throughout this journey of being CHAMPIONS,” he posted on Instagram.

Abuya will now hope for a fruitful CAF Champions League campaign next season after their run ended at the group stage this term.
