The former Gor Mahia player earns USL League One honors for strong performances with impressive stats.

Kenya international midfielder Tobias Otieno has secured his spot in the prestigious USL League One Team of the Week. 

The 24-year-old’s  exceptional performances for his team, South Georgia Tormenta, have captured the attention of fans and pundits alike.

Otieno has been making waves in the United States soccer scene, proving himself as a force to be reckoned with. 

His recent standout display occurred during a heart-stopping clash against Chattanooga Red Wolves, which ended in a captivating 4-4 draw. 

This was followed by an equally impressive midweek match against Northern Colorado Hail Storms FC, resulting in a 2-2 draw.

The statistics released by USL League One paint a picture of Otieno's contributions on the field. 

Notably, the former Gor Mahia midfielder registered an assist, showcasing his vision and playmaking abilities.  In addition to his offensive prowess, he excelled defensively, winning an impressive 11 duels and making 10 recoveries. 

Furthermore, Otieno's defensive prowess was highlighted by three crucial blocks that thwarted opponents' advances. His accuracy in passing stood at an impressive 81%, cementing his role as a vital link in Tormenta's gameplay.

Having completed his second season at South Georgia Tormenta, Otieno's journey to this point has been one of dedication and growth. 

He made his entry into the Statesboro-based side in early 2022, after a stint at another USL club, Union Omaha.

Otieno's soccer journey began in Western Kenya where he showcased his skills in the youth team of Sony Sugar FC. Over time, his talent could not be contained, and he earned a well-deserved promotion to the senior side.

In 2019, a pivotal opportunity arose when Gor Mahia came calling, and Otieno made a move to the club, marking a significant turning point in his career. He quickly acclimated to the new environment and displayed his capabilities on the field.

After making a mark with Gor Mahia for half a season, the allure of international horizons led him to the United States, where he joined Union Omaha in 2020.

As the current season unfolds, South Georgia Tormenta stands strong with 32 points amassed from 25 matches.

Ian Cameron coached the side to a commendable performance, which includes nine hard-fought victories along with five well-earned draws.

Despite encountering challenges along the way, the team has showcased their offensive prowess by netting an impressive 47 goals.
