Former Manchester United coach Benni McCarthy has shared how the mass staff sackings at the club had an effect on team performance under ex-manager Erik ten Hag.

Former Manchester United first-team coach Benni McCarthy has blamed some of the club’s current woes on the mass sackings witnessed at the club in the last one year.

United are on course to their worst-ever Premier League finish, sitting in 16th place on the table with just 39 points from 37 games after a poor run of form under Ruben Amorim, who started his reign in November 2024.

Amorim took over from Dutchman Erik ten Hag, who was at United from July 2022 to October 2024, and he had just overseen what was considered their worst-ever campaign hat saw the Red Devils finish eighth in the Premier League in 2023-24.

However, McCarthy, who worked under Ten Hag as the club’s attacking coach between July 2022 and June 2024, blames the struggles on the mass redundancies the club announced to staff during the course of the 2023-24 season.

As per the BBC, about 250 members of staff were made redundant last year in a cost-cutting measure by the club with 200 more sent packing this year as the INEOS-led administration tries to return the club to profitability.

“I had a little bit of a taste of that when I was still there with Erik. It was said that so many people were going to lose their jobs and even the coaching staff we were asking about ourselves, does that include us?” McCarthy said on Sporty TV.

How Did Staff Sackings Affect Man United Players?

Benni McCarthy and Bruno Fernandes enjoyed a special bond at Man United.

“Do I have to work harder; do I have to do more now or do I have to show these people that I am doing my job the right way and maybe they should look past me.

“It affected even the technical team because we were also concerned and worried about if we gonna be kicked out of the door because this was coming in. So, when you have that, it destabilises the club no matter how big or how world class players you have, those players are not going to be able to give you the best performances because all that is happening.”

McCarthy, now head coach of Kenya’s national team Harambee Stars, is, however, hopeful that United will finally get it right and begin challenging on the pitch once more.

“I think once the club is stabilised and it is running again smoothly, that is when you are going to see a big change onto the pitch as well but for now, Man United will go to some dark years,” he added.

The South African legend was lauded for transforming some of the club’s forwards such as Marcus Rashford, who had a career-high 30 goals in 2022-23 as United finished third, before they fell off the following campaign to limp to an eighth-place finish.

Things have, however, become worse under Amorim who has won just six of his 27 Premier League games with United stuck in an unfamiliar 16th position for months.
