Gor Mahia have confirmed when the Mashemeji Derby will be played but there is still one major hurdle they need to get over.

Gor Mahia have reportedly settled on a date for the Mashemeji Derby which was postponed earlier this month over lack of a suitable venue.

K’Ogalo were initially set to host bitter rivals AFC Leopards on May 11 and had identified Kasarani Stadium as the venue for the match but ran into headwinds when Confederation of African Football (CAF) advised against using the facility as it is still undergoing upgrades for the 2024 African Nations Championships.

That led to the postponement of the fixture but according to Mozzart Sport, the club has now settled on June 1 as the date for the second installment of the Mashemeji derby which will have a huge bearing on the FKF Premier League title race.

However, while Gor Mahia have a date, they still have nowhere to host the match with hopes that Nyayo Stadium will be made available to them.

Mashemeji Derby Venue Challenge for Gor Mahia

The challenge is that Nyayo is undergoing renovations for the Kip Keino Classic, slated for May 31, and the work of laying a tartan track has also delayed, putting the athletics event in jeopardy, which could spill over to Gor Mahia.

Gor Mahia had rejected a proposal to use Ulinzi Complex but there is now a realization that the 6,000-seater facility could be the fallback plan if Nyayo Stadium is not available.

“The date is confirmed—June 1st. We’ve already been informed. Nyayo is the preferred venue since Kasarani is still not ready, but it’s not 100% guaranteed due to ongoing renovations. If it’s not ready, a smaller venue like Ulinzi Sports Complex will be used. The federation has made it clear there will be no further postponements,” a source told Mozzart Sport.

Gor Mahia and Leopards played out a goalless draw in the first Mashemeji derby staged at Nyayo Stadium on March 30 but they cannot afford to drop points this time as they are behind league leaders Kenya Police by seven points.

K’Ogalo can hand Police the title with a loss to Leopards but if they win, the law enforcers could still clinch it with victory against Shabana on June 14.
