Benni McCarthy reveals why Hugo Broos deserves recognition after restoring order with Bafana Bafana.

South Africa football legend Benni McCarthy has praised Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos for restoring stability in South African football.

McCarthy, who currently tutors Harambee Stars, believes there have been signs of improvement under Broos, and that the progress is as a result of the patience offered to the Belgian.

“I think South Africa is slowly but surely getting on the right path because they gave Hugo Broos time to build the squad,” McCarthy told FARPost.

The former Manchester United coach reiterated that South Africa have had proper preparations for major tournaments, making their continental succes inevitable.

“You can see now that there is that continuity and consistency within the national team. So slowly but surely, they started to climb the ladder again because they had good preparations."

McCarthy, who lifted the champions league title as a player with FC Porto, added that Broos has fully implemented his philosophy with Bafana Bafana and the free-hand afforded to the veteran tactician allows him to make independent decisions.

“They had a coach who has been there for more than three years now. He was able to implement his philosophy to the team, and I think South Africa is a little bit stable.”

Broos,73, was appointed Bafana Bafana coach in 2021. He led South Africa to a third-place finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

From 1991 to 1998 Broos coached Club Brugge, winning the championship twice in 1992 and 1996. He also won the Belgian Cup in 1991, 1995 and 1996. From 2002 until 2005 he coached Anderlecht. He got the team into the Champions League and his team won the 2003–04 season championship.

Broos won the prestigious Belgian Coach of the Year award four times in his career, twice while coaching Club Brugge (1992 and 1996), once with Anderlecht in 2004, and with KRC Genk in 2007.

Broos led Cameroon to victory in the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations .He took the role of sporting director of K.V. Oostende after being laid-off as Cameroon's coach in February 2018.
