The Barcelona president insists that the club legend will not be forced out of the club despite reports that the Blaugrana could make a change before the season concludes.

Joan Laporta insists that Barcelona head coach Xavi Hernandez will not depart the club until the end of the season, and the club could be open to him staying at the club afterwards.

Why is Xavi Hernandez leaving Barcelona?

Last season’s LaLiga-winning manager revealed he will depart the club after the 2023-24 season after a 5-3 home loss to Villarreal in January.

That announcement came amid three losses in five in all competitions, including a 4-1 beatdown by Real Madrid in the Super Cup final and a 4-2 loss to Athletic Club in the Copa Del Rey.

Results have improved since the 2010 World Cup winner publicly disclosed his short-term plans, with Barcelona going unbeaten in 10 games in all competitions and advancing to the Champions League quarter-finals after a 4-2 aggregate win over Napoli in the first knockout round, leading to suggestions that the club legend could change his decision.

What did Laporta say about Xavi amid Hansi-Flick rumours?

Laporta insists the club will not make a change until the current season is over and reiterated that a new head coach will not be appointed until Xavi makes a final decision.

“Yes, absolutely. He already knows. I’d like him to stay,” said Laporta in an interview with Mundo Deportivo. “He keeps saying he’ll leave in June, but we’ll see. We don’t want to put this pressure on ourselves to make a decision because the way things are going is working for us now.”

On the reports linking last season’s LaLiga champions with the former Bayern Munich and Germany boss, the Barca president said: “Any manager who comes will need to adapt to our structure. Barca is above managers, players, presidents or executives. Everyone. We have created a successful model, and the manager will need to adapt.

“Any decision regarding a new coach will need to wait until the end of the season because we are not touching anything until Xavi makes his final decision.”

What comes next for Xavi at Barcelona?

Xavi’s team went into the international break after a 3-0 victory over Atletico Madrid, and they return to league action against Las Palmas on March 30, their final game before facing PSG in the Champions League quarter-final first-leg.

The Barcelona boss is banned for two Liga games after getting sent off in the win at the Civitas Metropolitano last weekend.
