Safaricom is paying an extra Ksh250,000 for every record broken.

Curtains came down on the 4th Kip Keino Classic drew its curtains on Saturday, May 13 with Africa’s fastest man Ferdinand Omanyala honoring his promise to defend the home turf with a blistering performance, much to the glee of fans.

Omanyala clocked a world lead time of 9.84 and he will be walking away with more than Ksh 800,000 as per the rules of World Athletics. Sha’Carri Richardson will also be rewarded handsomely after she stormed to victory in style over the 200m to set a new meeting record of 22.01. This figures do not including appearance fees.

Youngster Emmanuel Wanyonyi is also among the athletes who set a world lead time and will receive a huge token from the organisers.

As advised by World Athletics, the winners in the core events will receive approximately Ksh800,000 while those from the discretionary events will receive approximately Ksh400,000.

Athletes who placed second and third in the core events will be awarded approximately Ksh600,000 and Ksh400,000 respectively. Those in the discretionary events will be awarded about Ksh300,000 and Ksh200,000 respectively.

The athletes who crossed the finish line fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh in the core events will be awarded more than Ksh269, 153, Ksh201, 865, Ksh161, 492, and Ksh134,577 respectively. The athlete who finished eighth will be awarded Ksh107, 661.

For the discretionary events, the fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh-placed athletes will be awarded Ksh134,577, Ksh100,932, Ksh80,745, and Ksh67, 288. The eight-placed athlete will walk away with Ksh53,830.

The core events at the continental event include Hammer Throw, 100m, 200m, High Jump, and 800m races.

The discretionary events include the Javelin throwing, 1500m, 5000m, 3000m Steeple Chase and 400m men’s races.

There was also the category of national events that only Kenyans participated in. They include Long Jump, Shot Put, 10,000m, 400m Hurdles, and the 400m women’s race.

World Athletics also noted that for the middle-distance races, athletes who finish ninth, 10th, 11th, and 12th also need to be awarded.

Bonuses for breaking any world record are also put into consideration after the competitions but unfortunately, no world record was broken during the Kip Keino Classic.

The prize money is expected to be paid within 60 days of the receipt of the doping control clearance from the Athletics Integrity Unit and a complete invoice from the Athletes’ Representatives.

Meanwhile, Safaricom had also announced to give athletes who break records Ksh250,000. On Saturday, several meeting records were broken from javelin to the 400m races of both men and women.
