Beatrice Chebet has opened up on her game-changing conversation with Faith Kipyegon at the Prefontaine Diamond League Classic that inspired her to smash the 5000 meter world record.

The Prefontaine Classic turned into a showcase of Kenyan brilliance on Saturday, as Olympic champions Faith Kipyegon and Beatrice Chebet each shattered world records in the 1500m and 5000m respectively, fueling a historic evening of distance running.

But behind Chebet’s electrifying 13:58.06 world record in the 5000m lay a moment of quiet motivation — words of encouragement from her close friend and compatriot, Faith Kipyegon.

Both Chebet and Kipyegon arrived in Eugene with something to prove — not just to the world, but to themselves. And they delivered in spectacular fashion.

Kipyegon was off trying her sub-four minute marathon mile challenge in Paris, while Chebet had dominated the Rome Diamond League classic a week earlier.

“Before the meet, Faith told me, ‘You have to go for it,’ and I told her the same,” Chebet revealed after her race. “She was running the 1500m after me, and I promised I’d finish and then come watch her. To see her attempt the sub-four and break the world record — it made me so proud.”

Rome Run Made Me Believe it Was Possible- Chebet

For Chebet, the path to a new global mark began weeks earlier in Rome, where she sensed her form peaking after missing the record by a couple of seconds.. “After running in Rome, I realized I had the potential to break a world record,” she said. “That’s when I told myself, ‘I need to prepare well for Prefontaine.’ I’m so thankful to Nike for the opportunity and their continued support here.”

As the lights dimmed and the Hayward Field crowd roared, Chebet took charge of the race midway through the 5000m, making a decisive move once the pacemakers dropped off. “After 2000 meters, I knew I had to give it everything,” she said. “I told myself, ‘If I want the world record, I have to go for it — no one else is going to do it for me.’”

The final laps were a masterclass in grit and belief. “I was a bit nervous, but I reminded myself to believe. In the last 400 meters, I had to dig deep and find the energy to finish strong,” Chebet said. “I’m proud of how I handled it.”

Her finishing time of 13:58.06 not only obliterated the previous record but capped off a golden streak that now includes the 10,000m world record from 2024.

“I ran my first 5000m when Gudaf [Tsegay] set a world record — I ran around 14:10 or 14:05,” Chebet recalled. “Then last year I got the 10,000m record, and today, the 5000m… I can say this is the best performance of my career. I’ll be remembered.”

Chebet- I Was so Happy For Faith

Shortly after Chebet’s historic win, Kipyegon stepped onto the track for the 1500m, inspired by what her friend had just achieved — and returned the favor. The reigning Olympic champion smashed her own world record, dipping under the mythical four-minute barrier in 3:49.65, further cementing her legacy as the greatest miler of all time.

“I was so happy for her,” Chebet said. “We both believed in each other. That bond, that trust — it pushed us to do something incredible.”

Now, with world records in hand and eyes locked on Tokyo 2025, the Kenyan queens of distance running are not done yet. Chebet hinted that her next move will be to run a 10,000m in Nairobi as part of her final prep for the World Championships. “My focus is sharp,” she said. “I’m ready for Tokyo.”

In a sport often defined by rivalry, Chebet and Kipyegon are writing a new chapter — one defined by friendship, inspiration, and relentless excellence.
