The Kenyan middle-distance queen shattered her own 1,500m world record in Paris, showcasing unmatched speed and preparation for Tokyo.

Faith Kipyegon improved on the record of 3:49.04 she set at the Diamond League meeting in Paris on July 7, 2024.

The Kenyan superstar stormed to victory in 3:48.68, shaving 0.36 seconds off her own world record and cementing her status as the greatest 1,500m runner of all time.

In front of a buzzing crowd and under perfect racing conditions, the 31-year-old Olympic champion produced her trademark final-lap surge to leave her rivals trailing in her wake.

This was the third time Kipyegon has set a new global standard in the distance, having first broken the record in Florence in 2023 before improving it in Paris last year.

The race in Paris marked Kipyegon’s first 1,500m of the season, coming just days after an ambitious but ultimately unsuccessful attempt to become the first woman to break four minutes in the mile.

Although she fell short in that bid, the preparation laid the groundwork for another historic run in her signature event.

"I think the changes were that I was preparing myself for something special, which was to run under four minutes in a mile, and I think I pushed myself, getting better and better toward the 1,500, so I knew it was possible to still run under 3:49," she said.

Devastating Kick Secures Another Record

Faith Kipyegon breaks world record with a closing 400m that left no doubt about her dominance.

Unleashing a blistering 59.1-second final lap, she opened a decisive gap over the field. Australia’s Jessica Hull, who had clung to Kipyegon’s shoulder until the bell, ultimately settled for third in 3:52.67 after being overhauled by Ethiopia’s Diribe Welteji, who crossed the line in 3:51.44.

"For someone to show up and just keep doing it over and over again, she's phenomenal," Hull said of Kipyegon.

"She was aware that I was going to be there this time, so she put her foot down and made it really hard for that last 500 meters."

Kipyegon’s astonishing consistency and ability to peak when it matters most have become hallmarks of her career.

Just 90 minutes before her race, compatriot Beatrice Chebet set a new 5,000m world record, creating a historic night for Kenyan athletics.
