All three athletes are set to compete at their first Olympic Games having represented their country at global and continental championships previously.

The British Olympic Association (BOA) has officially named the initial three marathon athletes selected for the athletics team at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

The trio are Charlotte Purdue, coached by Nic Bideau and representing Aldershot Farnham and District, Calli Hauger-Thackery from Hallamshire, and Phil Sesemann, coached by Andrew Henderson and affiliated with Leeds City.

Phil Sesemann secured his spot in the men's marathon by surpassing the qualification standard with an impressive time of 2:08:04 at the Seville marathon earlier this month.

Meanwhile, Charlotte Purdue and Calli Hauger-Thackery earned their places in the women's marathon, both achieving a time of 2:22:17 at separate marathons towards the end of 2023.

All three athletes are poised to make their Olympic debut, having previously represented their country at global and continental championships.

They are among the first members of the Team GB athletics squad to be announced, with the selection policy specifying that athletes planning to compete in a marathon after February 19, 2024, will only be considered for the third round of selection on April 22, 2024.

Mark England, Team GB Chef de Mission, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “It is great to welcome Charlotte, Calli, and Phil to Team GB for Paris 2024."

"All three athletes are making their Olympic debuts, and I am sure they will relish the opportunity to run the unique and historic route that has been set by the Organising Committee.”

Paula Dunn, Olympic Head Coach at UK Athletics, shared her delight, saying, “We are delighted to confirm the first three athletes in the athletics squad for Paris 2024."

"All three athletes have produced excellent results to earn selection for the Olympic Games, so congratulations to the athletes, their coaches, and support networks."

"The focus is now on supporting their preparations and continuing to engage with them to add the most value so they are in the best position for their marathons this summer.”

The announced athletes are as follows:

Women:

Charlotte Purdue (Nic Bideau, Aldershot Farnham and District)

Calli Hauger-Thackery (Hallamshire)

Men:
