The Kenyan-born American has made an unexpected decision about his racing focus despite a standout performance.

Kenyan-born American Jonah Koech has disclosed that he will not be running the 1500m despite a great display at the Diamond League Meeting in Rabat on Sunday.

Jonah Koech unleashed a finishing kick to claim the win in a personal best time of 3:31.43 ahead of former world under-20 1500m champion Reynold Cheruiyot, who came in second in 3:31.78.

Another Kenyan, Festus Lagat, completed the podium in a personal best time of 3:32.06. Jonah Koech entered the race as an underdog with Reynold Cheruiyot the favourite to win, but the tables turned quickly with the 28-year-old taking the win.

Jonah Koech revealed his first love remains the 800m and that is his main focus of the 2025 season, as he looks to silence Emmanuel Wanyonyi and Marco Arop among other stars.

Koech added that the 1500m was to build his speed endurance since the 800m athletes have been dropping fast times, and he does not want to be left behind.

He pointed out that the crowd in Rabat contributed greatly to his victory, pointing out that it was not the main goal going into the race.

“No, I’m not a 1500m runner…this 1500m is just to build up endurance for the 800m in the coming events, because you see how these guys are running the 800m now,” Jonah Koech said.

“I need to build my speed endurance to catch up with those guys, they are doing really amazing in the 800m, they are not playing.

“The atmosphere greatly contributed to my performance. I was not feeling well today, but I decided to just give my all since it was my first 1500m of the season. I’m not sure what we will do, but I love the 800m.”

The race was Koech’s first race of his outdoor campaign after a successful indoor tour that saw him achieve podium finishes in all his races except one, the US Indoor Championships. He now shifts focus to the World Championships and has his work cut out if he is to make an impact.
