Kenyan favourite Ferdinand Omanyala has outlined how he wants to regain Kip Keino Classic glory amidst a stellar cast that includes South African teen star Bayanda Walaza.

Ferdinand Omanyala is looking to make amends for last year’s bad outing at Kip Keino Classic when the 2025 edition takes place on Saturday May 31.

Omanyala is the home favourite and crowd puller but there is pressure this time to do better than last year when he finished a disappointing fifth in the 100m race won by American Kenny Bednarek.

The 29-year-old has witnessed some good tidings at Kip Keino Classic, where he has two wins, having set the African record in Nairobi while he also ended his bad record against American runners.

Omanyala made his presence felt at the 2021 edition when he clocked 9.77 seconds to break the African record but it was just enough for second place behind American Trayvon Bromell, who clocked 9.76 seconds, but he had beaten former world and Olympics champion Justin Gatlin, who finished third.

However, in 2022, he secured his first Kip Keino Classic win, beating American Fred Kerley, before doing the same in 2023 and after missing out in 2024, he wants to right those wrongs this time around.

“Kip Keino Classic is a very important race for me, and I’ll never want to miss it while I’m still an active 100-meter athlete,” Omanyala told Kip Keino Classic.

“We've grown together, and the event has helped profile me to the top. People come to Kenya specifically to compete against me. I invite the world to come, and they do. I’m glad,” he added.

Omanyala knows beating esteemed runners is not just for him but its impact is felt across the country as young runners get belief that it can be done.

“Breaking that African record when I least expected it was amazing. Kip Keino really boosted my confidence, especially after beating top sprinters like Fred Kerley and Justin Gatlin. It’s a rare opportunity for Kenyan sprinters—and fans—to witness such elite competition on home soil and to see one of their own beating them,” he went on.

“That moment inspired many local sprinters and gave them confidence. I’m happy it paid off, and now we even have a team lined up for the 4x100m relay at the World Championships in Tokyo later in September.”

This year’s event will be held at the Ulinzi Complex and Omanyala is up against familiar foes in South African youngsters Bayanda Walaza and Shaun Maswanganyi as well as Claude Itoungue (Cameroon), Kennedy Luchem (Australia), Elijah Hall (USA), and Kenyan compatriot Mark Otieno.

Walaza has already beaten Omanyala this year, having floored him in Pretoria in March, and the Kenyan will seek to defend his turf.
