Despite finishing third in Rabat, Olympic champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi remains confident in his progress while focusing on the World Championships.

Reigning Olympic 800m champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi is not disappointed with his third-place finish at the Diamond League Meeting in Rabat.

Emmanuel Wanyonyi went into the race as a favourite to win, but failed to live up to expectations as he rounded up the podium in the race, clocking 1:43.37.

Botswana’s Tshepiso Masalela claimed the win in the race, clocking a world-leading time of 1:42.70, as Great Britain’s Max Burgin came home in second in a time of 1:43.34.

Emmanuel Wanyonyi revealed that he is slowly improving and cannot wait to see what he will be capable of at the World Championships in Tokyo, Japan, in September.

He added that the main goal is to polish a series of shortcomings his coach observed from the race as he eyes better results next time.

The world 800m silver medallist claimed that he is unafraid of the tough competition from Tshepiso Masalela and other lethal 800m runners, and he is only focused on what he will be able to produce once he lines up on the track in Tokyo.

“This was my first Diamond League of the season, competing in the 800m, and I have clocked 1:43, and that means that my body is okay, and this is too early in the season, the season is very long. I think my preparation is going well,” Emmanuel Wanyonyi revealed to TV47.

“The race was okay, and I am happy to have run that time because that was the first time I was running 800m in the Diamond League. I’ve come from 1:46 to 1:43, and I’m going to train hard ahead of the World Championships.”

Aside from the 800m at the Grand Slam Track in Kingston, Emmanuel Wanyonyi also competed in the 1500m, which he won.

He also raced in the 2km at the Kenyan Cross-Country Championships, winning the race in style. Wanyonyi also won the mile road at the Adizero Road to Records.

Wanyonyi came close to breaking David Rudisha’s 800m world record time of 1:40.91 last season, and this year, all eyes will be on him to get the job done.

His personal best time stands at 1:41.11, a time he ran to win the race at the 2024 Diamond League Meeting in Lausanne.
