Akani Simbine: 5 Sprinters Who Can Break His Dominant Win Streak

Stephen Awino 21:59 - 26.05.2025

Akani Simbine has had a dominant start to the 2025 campaign as he continues to lineup against the likes of Ferdinand Omanyala, Letsile Tebogo and Fred Kerley.

Akani Simbine remains a towering figure early in the 2025 campaign with a blistering start to the season.

Currently on a hot winning streak, Simbine holds the world-leading time of 9.90 seconds in the 100m in 2025.

The South African's consistency and explosive starts have made him the early man to beat.

However, as the 2025 season heats up, a wave of elite sprinters is gaining momentum and any one of them could end Simbine’s dominant streak.

Here is a look at five sprinters who can topple the South African.

5. Noah Lyles

Lyles is known for his strong finishes and psychological edge on the track.

With a personal best of 9.79s and dominance across both 100m and 200m, he remains a consistent global force capable of outrunning anyone on the day.

However, the reigning 2024 Olympic 100m champion is yet to kickstart his campaign in the 100m.

A potential showdown against Simbine went up in smoke when the world champion sustained an injury that saw him unable to compete.

Nonetheless, Lyles is among the few sprinter who can goo into a 100m showdown with Simbine as a favorite.

4. Letsile Tebogo

At only 21, Tebogo has already etched his name in history books.

The Botswana sprint sensation won gold in the 200m at the 2024 Paris Olympics with a blistering 19.46s, becoming the fastest African ever over that distance.

His rapidly improving 100m times and built up endurance from the longer sprints make him a real threat to Simbine.

However early season encounters has seen Simbine have the edge over Tebogo in the Diamond League Circuit.

3. Fred Kerley

Fred Kerley’s versatility and power remain key weapons in 2025.

The 2022 World Champion has posted consistent sub-10s over multiple seasons.

His 9.81s performance in Paris 2024 proves that he’s still among the elite, and he has the tools to take down any sprinter on the right day.

Despite a sluggish start to his campaign Kerley mounted a strong showing on Sunday against Simbine at the Rabat Diamond League claiming third behind Ferdinand Omanyala and the South African.

2. Kishane Thompson

Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson stunned the track world in 2024 with a 9.79s run at the Paris Olympics to claim silver.

Thompson's raw speed and youth make him one of the island’s brightest prospects since Usain Bolt.

The pair have already come up against each other at the Shaghai Diamond League with Simbine edging the Jamaican narrowly.

As the Jamaican continues to gain form for the season, he could easily challenge Simbine in future meets.

Africa’s fastest man, Omanyala has been Simbine's closest competitor in thes early season encounters.

Known for his incredible top-end speed, the Kenyan has come up short on more than four instnces to get the better of Simbine.

Omanyala has however closed the gap between himself and Simbine significantly in recent meets.

Their regional rivalry only adds more fire to each encounter as Omanyala continues to lineup against Simbine.
