ATHLETICS Youngster Cheruiyot fires warning shots to senior athletes after successful transition
Cheruiyot, 18, shocked the senior athletes when he took top honours after clocking a new Personal Best time of 3:32.01 over the 1500m race.
World under-20 1500m champion Reynold Cheruiyot and World Cross-country champion Ishmael Kipkurui are among some of the youngsters who are turning heads with their impressive performances on the track and roads.
“My aim is to work hard and make the cut to the World Championships. I am aware of the young athletes who are coming up fast and they are strong…so I have to work extra hard. The junior athletes are really doing well and that is a great thing for them,” he said.
In preparation for the national trials, the 2022 Commonwealth Games 1500m silver medallist is planning to compete in as many Diamond League Meetings as he can to make sure he is physically fit.
He already started off with the meeting in Doha, Qatar where he finished an impressive fifth over the 3000m race. He then went for the Kip Keino Classic where he finished third over the 800m.

The youngster’s main focus at the moment is qualifying for the World Championships in Budapest.
“I want to compete in a number of Diamond League Meetings to work on my fitness levels ahead of the trials.
I competed in the 3000m in Doha to test my endurance and the 800m in Kip Keino to test my speed. My body feels good and I am happy with the results I have posted so far,” he said.
