Mary Moraa is aiming to emulate Eunice Sum with a standout performance at the Prefontaine Classic as she builds toward her world title defence.

Reigning world 800m champion Mary Moraa has her fingers crossed as she looks to become the second Kenyan woman to win the two-lap race at the Prefontaine Classic on Saturday, July 5.

Mary Moraa descends on the track at the Hayward Field after enduring a mixed start to her season, where she has only managed two wins in the 800m since she opened her season at the Grand Slam Track Kingston.

However, Mary Moraa is not focusing on her losses as she focuses on a great build-up ahead of her title defence at the World Championships in Tokyo, Japan, in September.

The Kenyan 800m star has competed at the Prefontaine Classic twice, making her debut in 2023, where she finished fourth as Athing Mu claimed top honours.

Mary Moraa then finished second at the 2024 edition of the Prefontaine Classic as Keely Hodgkinson claimed the win. Now, she can only go upwards from there.

Eunice Sum is the only Kenyan woman to have won the 800m at the Prefontaine Classic, and Mary Moraa wants to join the list.

She has expressed confidence in her training, but remained vague about her exact expectations; however, it is no secret that she is interested in achieving the historic feat.

“I’m ready for this Saturday, for the race. I’ve been training well, and this is the race I have been waiting for, and they call it the Mutola 800m,” Mary Moraa said in a pre-race press conference.

“This is my second time running the Pre-Classic, and when we are competing, we only have three places on the podium. In the race, you can expect anything, you can win, you can lose, or anything can happen. I don’t know what will happen, if I win or anything happens, I am very ready.”

Mary Moraa added that she does not have a set plan when she competes. She explained that during a race, especially after the first lap, an athlete needs to ask themselves why they are running.

She added that, for her, she believes she is chasing something that will bring her happiness in the future, and that thought gives her the motivation to run well.

“When I compete, I don’t have any plan. When you are competing, after the first lap, you need to ask yourself why you are running,” Mary Moraa added.

The Kenyan now shifts focus to making a mark at the Prefontaine Classic, and all eyes will be on her to deliver against such a strong field.
