Kenya Sevens were handed what appears to be an easy opponent in the quarter-final of the ongoing Africa Sevens which is acting as the 2024 Paris Olympics qualifier

Kenya Sevens head coach Kevin Wambua got his wish as his side landed a favourable cup quarter-final draw at the Africa Sevens which is acting as the 2024 Olympics qualifiers.

Shujaa will play Burkina Faso in Sunday’s quarter-final after the West Africans sneaked into the last eight as one of the best third-placed teams at the close of pool play alongside Nigeria.

Kenya had an unblemished group stage campaign when they started with a 34-10 win over Nigeria before thrashing Namibia 50-0 in their second match and ended with a 38-12 victory over Zambia.

It is what Wambua had called on his charges to do before heading to Zimbabwe for the tournament as he feels it will help them conserve some energy for the more grueling semi-final and final matches if they get there.

Given Kenya’s pedigree, Burkina Faso do not appear to pose a big threat, at least on paper, but Shujaa would be naïve to underrate them even if they possess less quality to what Wambua’s charges have.

Hosts Zimbabwe topped Pool C and reached the cup quarters alongside defending champions Uganda while Zambia joined Kenya from Pool B. South Africa and Madagascar also qualified for the cup quarters from Pool A.

Kenya and South Africa, considered by many as favourites to win the tournament, will not meet until the final if both get to the latter stages of the competition following Saturday evening’s draw.

Shujaa, who play Burkina Faso at 10 am Kenyan time on Sunday, will take on the winner between Zimbabwe and Madagascar in the semi-final while South Africa will take on either Zambia or Uganda in the last four.

That will set up a mouth-watering final between the two for the sole direct ticket to the 2024 Olympic Games.
