Zedekiah 'Zico' Otieno revealed the shortcomings during the season that allowed Kenya Police to edge Gor Mahia in the title race.

Gor Mahia coach Zedekiah ‘Zico’ Otieno has broken his silence after Kenya Police denied his side a chance to defend their Football Kenya Federation Premier League title.

Sunday’s fixtures were a huge determinant on who would lift the Premier League trophy, and Kenya Police gave their all in their second-last game, winning 1-0 against Shabana in a match played at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos.

Gor Mahia, going up against Ulinzi Stars, secured a 3-2 win, but that was not enough to gather enough points to beat Kenya Police in the title race.

Kenya Police still lead the Premier League table with 64 points, with Gor Mahia a close second with 58 points, with the two clubs set to clash in their final match at the Ulinzi Sports Complex.

Gor Mahia have experienced a series of challenges on and off the pitch, including the sacking of the coach Sinisa Mihic as the title race heated up.

However, Zedekiah ‘Zico’ Otieno believes Gor Mahia rested on their laurels at some point during the league, leading to the loss.

Zedekiah ‘Zico’ Otieno revealed that they were inconsistent throughout the league and that is what cost them the title.

He slammed the players for not showing up in all their matches, revealing that there were games where they had chances to win but failed to live up to the billing. Gor Mahia were chasing a 22nd league title and a third straight crown but fell short.

Zico further congratulated Kenya Police for clinching their maiden title, noting that they deserved it since they took every match with the seriousness it deserved.

“The league is a marathon, and Police have taken the league, so congratulations to them. I believe it is all about consistency…that was what was wrong with our team,” Zedekiah ‘Zico’ Otieno said as quoted by Capital Sport.

“We were not consistent enough. We were losing games we were not supposed to lose…so if you are not consistent enough, it is very difficult to be declared champions.”

Zedekiah ‘Zico’ Otieno further congratulated the players for showing up in their second-last league match against Ulinzi Stars, where they secured a 3-0 win.

Zico pointed out that they were in control of the game for the most part and pointed out that their silly mistakes cost them two goals, but they will be keen to do better next season.

“I think we played well and controlled the game. We got a goal, although we lost concentration in our defence and conceded an easy goal,” he revealed.

“All in all, I congratulate the boys for a good work this season, and hopefully we can win the FKF Cup and represent the country.”

Zico concluded by congratulating the players, saying it was not easy to change coaches three times in a season and still manage to finish where they did.
