Letsile Tebogo has made a heartfelt statement after a disappointing performance at the Rabat Diamond League.

Letsile Tebogo endured a tough outing at the Diamond League Meeting in Rabat on Sunday night, where he was expecting to dominate.

Going into the race, Letsile Tebogo was ready to shine for the thousands of Africans who had gathered in the stadium to watch him, but a few hiccups hindered that.

The reigning Olympic 200m champion intended to compete in the 100m and 200m and, hopefully, secure victory in both events.

However, he could only manage a ninth-place finish in the 100m, with South Africa’s Akani Simbine extending his winning ways in 9.95 seconds. Africa’s fastest man, Ferdinand Omanyala and Olympic bronze medallist Fred Kerley finished second and third in the race.

Letsile Tebogo also scratched from the 200m, with Lindsey Courtney taking the win as Liberia’s Joseph Fahnbulleh came in second. Fred Kerley came home in third.

Following the last-minute withdrawal from the men’s 200m and disappointing finish in the 100m, fans could tell there was something amiss with Letsile Tebogo’s form.

At the pre-race press conference, the world 100m silver medallist had expressed confidence in his training and was sure about performing well, but the opposite had just happened.

To address the speculation, Letsile Tebogo shared a message on his Instagram page, noting that he has been struggling with a recurring injury that has been hard to deal with.

“Today’s performance wasn’t what I had hoped for. I’m currently dealing with a recurring injury, which hasn’t been easy,” Letsile Tebogo said.

“However, I’m channelling this disappointment and pain into resolve. I’m already focused on recovery and growth, and I know I will come back a stronger man. See y’all soon❤️‍.”

Meanwhile, Letsile Tebogo started his season with a series of 400m races to work on his endurance that would help him become a better 200m runner.

He made his 100m debut at the Potch Invitational Meet in South Africa before heading to the Diamond League Meeting in Xiamen, where he finished seventh. Letsile Tebogo improved to third at the Diamond League Meeting in Suzhou.

The world 200m bronze medallist competed in his first 200m of the season at the Botswana Golden Grand Prix before securing another win at the Diamond League Meeting in Doha.

The focus remains on the World Championships in Tokyo, Japan this year and Letsile Tebogo hopes he will have fully recovered by that time.
