South African coach Rulani Mokwena has disclosed how he turned down a chance to work at a top Egyptian club due to his respect for his mentor Pitso Mosimane.

South African coach Rulani Mokwena has opened up about how he recently rejected a chance to coach one of Africa’s biggest teams due to his respect for one of his mentors.

Mokwena is without a job after leaving Moroccan giants Wydad Athletic Club in May but he could perhaps be employed again by now had he accepted an offer from Zamalak recently.

The 38-year-old is among candidates who were being lined up by the Egyptian giants but also on the list was his mentor Pitso Mosimane, who is also free following his departure from Iranian side Esteghlal in January.

However, Mokwena rejected the chance to be interviewed for the job after learning that Mosimane was also in the running and says he respects the former Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly coach so much that he could not compete with him for a coaching job.

What Did Mokwena Say About Rejecting Zamalek?

“The easiest to bat away would be Zamalek and I did not hear from them after I said I had heard that coach Pitso was in the running for the position,” Mokwena said on Soccer Africa show on SuperSport TV.

“My relationship, my respect for him would not allow me to compete with coach Pitso for a coaching job. It just wouldn’t sit well with me. So, I pulled out and I said I would rather they give it to coach Pitso.

“My agent said this is a big club but my respect for coach Pitso and what he has done for my career is massive,” added Mokwena.

Mokwena, however, admitted that he would be open to coaching South African giants Orlando Pirates who are looking for a coach following the departure of Spanish tactician Jose Riviero to Egyptian giants Al Ahly.

“Of course, I would. I would consider. It’s a big club and has people close to my heart, a man I am very fond of in Dr [Irvin] Khoza [Pirates chairman] and he will always have a special place in my heart,” Mokwena said when asked if he would consider the Pirates job.

Mokwena started his coaching career at Mamelodi Sundowns who he joined in 2014 and worked with the junior side before Mosimane made him one of his assistants.

He would leave in 2017 to become assistant coach at Pirates and then head coach on an interim basis in 2019 before a brief stint at Chippa United in South Africa after which he returned to Sundowns as co-coach in 2020 before being made head coach two years later and implemented an attractive style of play that saw him lauded as one of the best tacticians in Africa.
