The Blues are hesitant to sign Mike Maignan from AC Milan due to his £25m price tag and contract situation.

Chelsea have reservations over AC Milan's £25 million valuation of Mike Maignan casting doubt over the French goalkeeper’s potential move to Stamford Bridge this summer.

Despite initial talks between the clubs, the Blues are reluctant to meet the Italian side’s asking price, particularly with Maignan entering the final year of his contract at the San Siro.

Maignan, 29, is widely regarded as one of Europe’s finest goalkeepers and has been the undisputed number-one for France since Hugo Lloris retired from international football in early 2023.

Chelsea’s Goalkeeping Puzzle: Too Many, Not Enough Trust

His consistency for both club and country has drawn interest from top clubs across Europe, including Chelsea, who continue to seek a long-term solution between the posts.

However, Chelsea’s pursuit of Maignan has stalled overvaluation concerns.

The club views Milan’s £25 million demand as excessive, especially given the goalkeeper’s limited contract duration. With no formal bid yet made, it appears Chelsea are weighing their options carefully rather than rushing into a deal they deem poor value.

There is also internal competition at Stamford Bridge. While Maignan would undoubtedly add experience and quality, Chelsea already have several goalkeepers on their books.

Robert Sanchez, who endured an inconsistent season, ended the 2024/25 campaign strongly and remains in contention.

Filip Jorgensen, though mostly used in Conference League fixtures, remains the backup option for new manager Enzo Maresca.

Meanwhile, Djordje Petrovic impressed on loan at Strasbourg, even winning their Player of the Season award, and is pushing for a starting role or an exit if not guaranteed minutes.

Additionally, Chelsea has high hopes for 19-year-old prospect Mike Penders, who is set to arrive at the club this summer.

While he is unlikely to feature immediately in the first team, the club sees him as a future Premier League goalkeeper and may look to loan him out for regular game time.

Future Planning: Young Talent and Transfer Caution

Though sources indicate Maignan would be open to a move to West London, Chelsea are unlikely to be rushed into overpaying.

Multiple goalkeepers are vying for the number one spot and the club wary of repeating past mistakes—like the £71 million outlay on Kepa Arrizabalaga—they are approaching negotiations with caution.

For now, Maignan remains on Chelsea’s radar, but unless Milan lowers their demands or Chelsea offloads one of their current goalkeepers, the move appears unlikely.

The Blues are focused on finding value in the market, and unless that balance is struck, Maignan may not be the next name added to their goalkeeping legacy.
