Peter Schmeichel has criticised Lisandro Martinez's defending following the defeat against Brighton, saying the Argentine was "trying to be a hero."

Manchester United suffered their third defeat of the season in a 3-1 loss to Brighton at Old Trafford.

The defeat against Brighton comes as a discouraging second-straight loss for Erik Ten Hag's team in the Premier League.

Schmeichel has now faulted Lisandro Martinez for his performance against Brighton as they lost ground in the title race.

Schmeichel slams Martinez

After the game, Schmeichel criticised centre-back Martinez's defensive play, saying he ought to have been more aggressive in trying to stop Gross from scoring Brighton's second.

He said as reported by Daily Mail, “It is kind of what happens at Manchester United at the minute, it is very individual,' the former goalkeeper said to Premier League Productions.

“Players, for instance, Martinez here, are trying to be a hero and get in and block,' he added, as he recalled the side's defending for the second goal.

“People know this. If we look at him there, he puts himself in a position directly in the line of the goalkeeper.

“He should be closing down rather than just stood up trying to block. If you want to block, don't turn your body, stand tall. Clearly, things aren't right for Manchester United.”

During the game, the 25-year-old failed to block Simon Adringa's cross which found Welbeck in the area and the striker poked the ball home to give the Seagulls the lead.

The Argentine also overcommitted himself with Brighton midfielder Gross having time to avoid him and fire his shot straight past the goalkeeper.
