Gomes describes being immersed in Manchester United's rich history from a young age. Coaches instilled in him the legacy of the Busby Babes, George Best, and Bobby Charlton, creating a strong sense of the club's culture.

The former Red Devil even recalls the "black boot policy" in the academy, designed to foster a sense of unity among the young players.

He played alongside future stars like Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood, and Scott McTominay, benefiting from the guidance of his father, Gil, a former Portuguese youth international, and his godfather, Nani, a decorated United player.

Gomes credits Nani with providing valuable life lessons and insights into professional football.

"Growing up I always had that support from my family, but when I had conversations with Nani and Dad, it's different because I know they have been there," said Gomes as quoted by BBC Sports.

The transition to first-team training was a daunting experience. At 16, Gomes found himself sharing the pitch with established stars like Wayne Rooney, Michael Carrick, and Juan Mata.

The Weight of the Shirt

The pressure of playing for Manchester United is well-documented. Gomes acknowledges that the "weight of the shirt" can impact some players.

"Players may have been intimated or not really know about the weight, what it carries and what it takes. But ultimately, sometimes, it's down to environment, timing and having the right things in place to help you," he noted.

While Gomes himself found international recognition away from United, he believes that success isn't simply a matter of escaping the pressure.

Leaving United was a difficult decision for Gomes, but he felt it was necessary for his career progression.

Since moving to Lille, Gomes has flourished, making over 100 senior appearances and gaining valuable Champions League experience.

Gomes earned his first England caps under interim manager Lee Carsley, showcasing his playmaking abilities.

While he hasn't featured under current manager Thomas Tuchel, Gomes remains in contact and hopes to earn a place in the squad for the upcoming World Cup.

Five years after leaving Manchester United, Angel Gomes is thriving in France and pursuing his dream of representing England on the world stage.
