Manchester City’s new midfielder Rayan Cherki is determined to get his revenge on Manchester United, promising to ‘kill’ them after their dramatic win over his ex-team.

New Manchester City signing Rayan Cherki is eager to face Manchester United after his former club, Lyon, suffered a dramatic Europa League quarter-final exit at Old Trafford last season.

United staged a stunning comeback in the second leg, scoring three times—including twice in the final minute of extra time—to overturn a 4-2 deficit and win 5-4, progressing 7-6 on aggregate.

Cherki, who scored in both legs, was seen celebrating his goal at Old Trafford with a controversial gesture.

When asked about the incident, the 21-year-old laughed and admitted he's looking forward to facing United again.

"I [didn't] like [it] when Manchester United won the game against Lyon because I am a Lyonnais. Now I am waiting for the game [to] kill them. I'm here to win all the games,” said Cherki as per the BBC.

The Premier League fixtures, set to be released on Wednesday, will reveal when Cherki will get his chance for revenge.

Cherki, who joined City on a five-year deal for an initial £30.45m, was previously linked with a move to Manchester United. The highly-rated French player, described as "one of the greatest technicians in Europe," made his senior debut for Lyon at 16 and amassed 29 goals and 45 assists in 185 appearances.

While capable of playing on the wing, Cherki prefers a central attacking midfield role and is seen as a potential successor to Kevin De Bruyne, who recently left City for Napoli. City have also bolstered their midfield with the signing of Dutch international Tijjani Reijnders from AC Milan.

However, Cherki is determined to forge his own path at City. "I'm not Kevin De Bruyne, he is the legend. I'm here to help the team and to write my own story. I hope to win all the time with the team,” he added.

He also expressed his ambition to win major trophies and the Ballon d'Or, following in the footsteps of teammate Rodri, who won the prestigious award in 2024.
