Angola have fired a message to their CHAN 2024 opponents, including Kenya, after their team demolished South Africa in the COSAFA Cup final to retain their title.

Kenya have been handed a warning by one of their opponents for the upcoming 2024 African Nations Championships (CHAN 2024) after Angola won the COSAFA tournament in emphatic style.

Angola thrashed hosts South Africa 3-0 in the final in Bloemfontein on Sunday to win the tournament which is contested by South African nations, defending their crown while sealing a fifth title.

The winners totally dominated South Africa with tournament’s top scorer Depu, scoring a brace, and eight goals in total, before Milson completed the rout in what was a complete performance that makes them one of the favourites at CHAN 2024.

Angola had a squad made of local-based players, who will likely be relied upon at CHAN 2024, and their display suggests they will be a problem for all their Group A opponents, who include Kenya.

Can Kenya Get Out of the ‘Group of Death’?

Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy during training.

Kenya landed in what is termed the ‘Group of Death’ that has Morocco and DR Congo, both two-time champions, Angola, runners-ups in 2011, and Zambia, whose best result is third place in 2009.

Kenya, meanwhile, have never participated at the tournament and with their little experience, they will have a hard time taking on the other sides who have reached the later stages of the event.

Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy promised to build a strong squad that will make Kenyans proud and he must have been taking notes from the COSAFA tournament.

“Positive things to look forward to CHAN and I am excited that the team will be ready and we will have a good time and prep them so that when CHAN comes, this team will be ready to go and hopefully we can bless the country with move victories to make them happy,” McCarthy said after watching his side win 2-1 against Chad in a friendly match last Tuesday.

The CHAN 2024 tournament will kick off on August 2 with Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania co-hosting it.
