Former Kaizer Chiefs coach has been shortlisted for the Gor Mahia head coach role as the club narrows down candidates from a large pool of applicants.

Former Kaizer Chiefs coach Cavin Johnson is among the managers who have been shortlisted for the top job at Kenyan Premier League side Gor Mahia.

More than 100 coaches, 148 to be precise, had applied for the vacant head coach role at Gor Mahia FC by the application deadline last week, Thursday, July 10, 2025.

The club received a total of 539 applications for major roles such as head coach, assistant coach, team manager, team doctor, physiotherapist, strength and conditioning coach, goalkeeper coach, and Chief Executive Officer.

Cavin Johnson will be looking to make the cut as fans expect Gor Mahia to decide in the coming days.

Johnson has not coached a club since leaving Kazier Chiefs in July last year after the appointment of Nasreddine Nabi as their head coach.

Cavin Johnson stands as a great fit for Gor Mahia’s top job, having been an assistant coach to Pitso Mosimane at Al Ahly SC. If he secures the job, he will be the first South African coach to lead a Kenyan side in the history of football.

On their part, Gor Mahia parted ways with their Croatian head coach Sinisa Mihic by mutual agreement in May.

The club revealed that the cause of the split was due to a string of poor results, which included a draw against Murang'a Seal that significantly dented their title hopes.

Sinisa Mihic’s assistants, Zedekiah ‘Zico’ Otieno and Michael Nam, took charge of the team on an interim basis, but that did not make things any better as Gor Mahia ended their season trophyless, leading to the sacking of the entire technical bench.

They lost the FKF Kenya Premier League title to Kenya Police and lost the FKF Cup title to Nairobi United following a 2-1 loss.
