Michira, who has been on form for Shabana this season, was among the names that were overlooked by Benni McCarthy for the upcoming 2024 CHAN.

Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy has clarified that players not included in his provisional squad for the CECAFA Four Nations Tournament in Tanzania—such as Shabana FC’s standout winger Brian Michira—still have a chance to make it into the final squad for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

McCarthy, who was appointed to steer Kenya through CHAN 2024, has already had to make adjustments to his plans. On Tuesday evening, he added Marvine Nabwire and Byrne Omondi to the provisional squad after initially leaving them out.

The reshuffle was prompted by the unavailability of key players Emmanuel Osoro and Moses Shumah, both of whom have completed transfers to Zambian Premier League side Power Dynamos.

As per CAF regulations, players in foreign leagues are not eligible for CHAN, which is reserved strictly for home-based talent.

“We’ve already lost Emmanuel Osoro… he signed a contract with a foreign club,” said McCarthy. “It’s a shame because he did exceptionally well, especially when we were in Morocco.

“ Then you also lose Shumah (Moses), another key player. Losing two quality players weeks before CHAN is tough.”

Late Squad Changes Shake Things Up

The omissions of other notable local talents have drawn mixed reactions from fans. Tusker FC’s Brian Opondo, Ulinzi Stars duo Yakeen Mutheli and Staphod Odhiambo, and AFC Leopards’ Kelly Madada were among those dropped from the initial squad.

Particularly, the exclusion of Shabana FC’s Brian Michira raised eyebrows. Michira has been in stellar form this season, consistently impressing with his pace, creativity, and goal contributions.

His omission sparked conversation among fans who believe his performances merit national team recognition.

McCarthy: 'We’re Keeping an Open Mind'

Despite the initial exclusions, McCarthy emphasized that the door remains open for high-performing players to earn a spot in the final CHAN squad. He acknowledged the unpredictability of the selection process, especially when forced changes occur late in preparation.

“It’s a really good group, but if there are top players available and coming through, then yes, we’re open to integrating them into the team,” he said.

“When you lose players of Osoro and Shumah’s stature just weeks before the tournament, it’s difficult. So you have to come in with an open mind.”

Hope for Players Like Michira

McCarthy’s comments provide a lifeline for players like Michira who continue to perform at a high level in the FKF Premier League.

While he may not have made the CECAFA tournament squad, his chances of making the final CHAN 2024 roster remain alive—especially if more injuries or transfers impact the current group.

“If players are fit, healthy, and impress us, we’re open to including them,” McCarthy added.

With CHAN 2024 fast approaching, the Harambee Stars’ squad remains fluid. McCarthy’s willingness to consider overlooked players offers hope not just to Michira, but to any home-based talent consistently proving their worth on the pitch.
